This boy was 9 years old when his mom died due to a grenade explosion. A short time later his father died from alcoholism. Now 14 years-old and the oldest of four children, he lives in a slum village in Phnom Penh with his grandparents. Since his grandfather has a mental illness and is unable to work, his grandmother sells morning glory (a Cambodian vegetable) when it is available. When it’s not available, she collects reusable garbage to sell. Before enrolling in school, this precious boy helped take care of his brothers and sisters and sometimes picked up garbage on the street to sell and support his family.

Thanks to generous sponsors, he is now enrolled in school and receiving school lunch sponsorship. His family has also been blessed with housing outside the slum – a safe place for him to learn and grow. Such a transformation! He is a gentle, warm, bright boy who wanted to go to school so he could get a job as a tuk-tuk (Cambodian taxi) driver, but his “big dream” is to become a pilot. We are believing big with him.

His family lives in a floating house with 6 other families.

He knows education is important, even though he has not yet discovered his dream for the future. He is now enrolled in school and receiving school lunch sponsorship. He is learning and making new friends at school and no longer has to collect garbage.

School Girl

After

This sweet 13 year-old and her two sisters live with their grandparents in a small rental room in a Phnom Penh slum. Both of her parents are disabled and unable to work. Her grandparents are only able to earn about $6 USD per day, so she collects recyclable garbage to sell to help support the family.

She wanted very much to go to school to continue her education, so she could get a good job in the future. Without education the cycle of poverty would continue, with little options for employment outside of corrupt activities. However, thanks to a generous donor she is now enrolled in school and receiving school lunch sponsorship.  Her life will never be the same!

This 9 year-old lives with his mother and older sister in a rental room of a Phnom Penh slum. After his father’s death, the family became very poor. His mother is a cook in a restaurant, but only earns about $70 USD per month.

He wanted to have an education but was unable to attend school without support. Thanks to a generous donor he is now enrolled in school and receiving school lunch sponsorship.  We are so proud of his progress.
